Staff Correspondent

Post-mortem conducted, but identity of body yet to be established

  • Procedures of inquest, post-mortem have been videographed
  • These will be sent to human rights panel

BELLARY: A state of shock and blood clots may have led to the death of the person who was in police custody on Wednesday, according to the post-mortem report.

Official sources said here on Thursday that T.N. Chandrashekar, head of Forensic Science, Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, had conducted the post-mortem on Thursday.

There had been a blunt force impact and there were blood clots on the body. But the identity of the body was yet to be established, and no one had claimed it, they said.

According to the police, the man spoke only in Telugu. He once said his name was Kondapalli Prasad, and later said it was something else, they said.

The police have informed all police stations in the district, and also those in the neighbouring districts in Andhra Pradesh.

T.H.M. Kumar, Assistant Commissioner, who conducted an inquest of the body said that except for bruises on the knees, toes and shoulders, there were no major external injuries.

The procedures of inquest and post-mortem had been videographed and would be sent to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), he said.

    Theft bid

According to Superintendent of Police Amrit Paul, the Cowl Bazar Police had received a call from Tilak Nagar on Wednesday saying that one person

of a three-member gang that made a theft attempt had been caught by the residents. Two constables went to the spot and saw the man kept with his hands tied. They were told that he had fallen down while trying to escape along with the other two who accompanied him.

He was brought to the Cowl Bazar police station. When asked what his name was, the accused told them in Telugu that he was nervous, and also complained of chest pain.

He was rushed to the VIMS Hospital where he was declared brought dead by the doctors, Mr. Paul said.

Mr. Paul did not rule out the possibility of the residents having assaulted the accused before handing him over to the police.

The incident had been reported to the NHRC and the inquest and post-mortem report, along with the video cassettes would be forwarded on Thursday.

Action would be taken against the police personnel if found guilty, he said.
