Kerala University D.Litt. for CJI

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The University of Kerala has decided to confer honorary D.Litt degrees on Chief Justice of India K.G. Balakrishnan, ISRO chairman G. Madhavan Nair and poet O.N.V. Kurup. This decision was taken at a meeting of the university's Syndicate here on Thursday. — Staff Reporter

Bail plea rejected

Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Thursday dismissed the bail plea of C.P. Moideen Koya, accused in the Marad carnage case, in which nine persons were killed in 2003, and directed the Special Court, Kozhikode, to complete examination of the accused within five months. The directive in this regard was issued by Justice V. Ramkumar. He said if the task was not over within the period, it should be reported to the High Court. There are 139 accused in the case. — PTI

Pottekkatt award

Kozhikode: T.K. Hamsa, MP, has been chosen for the S.K. Pottekkatt Award instituted by the S.K. Pottekkatt Award Samithi here in memory of the writer. A jury comprising writers U.A. Khader, Abkar Kakkattil and P.R. Nathan choose Mr. Hamsa for the award which comprises cash prize of Rs.10,000, memento and citation. Minister for Home Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will present the award at a function to be held at Alakapuri on February 11. — Staff Reporter

RYF plans stir

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Revolutionary Youth Front has warned the Government of strong agitation if it went ahead with the agreement being made by the previous United Democratic Front Government with the Asian Development Bank (ADB). In a statement issued here on Thursday, RYF State secretary Saleem P. Chacko has urged the Government to explore every possibility to mobilise local resources for implementing various projects for drinking water supply, sewage treatment and disposal, road development, and so on, without going for foreign aid. — Staff Reporter

Gita festival

KOLLAM: Swamy Sadyojatha, the prime disciple of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, will inaugurate the 11-day Gita Festival 2007 organised by the Upanishad Vidya Bhavan (UVB) at the Cantonment Maidan here from February 1. UVBpresident C.V. Padmarajan said that G. Balakrishnan Nair would officiate as the yajna acharya. - Staff Reporter
