"Govt. fails to protect interests of villagers"

Staff Reporter

Non-official members of DDA write to Ajay Maken

NEW DELHI: The non-official members of the Delhi Development Authority Board have suggested to the Union Urban Development Ministry that certain commercial activities in the border villages of the Capital should be allowed and the concept of the green belt should not be discriminatory to the villagers and farmers.

Sending their objections to the minutes of the Board meetings and to the proposed notification of the Master Plan for Delhi-2021 (MPD 2021), the non-official members have pointed out that all the members of the Authority had agreed unanimously that the concept of green belt in Delhi's border villages was discriminatory to the villagers and farmers because such belts have not been provided for in the border villages of Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

However, the non-official members have said in their letter to Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken that the minutes of the meetings gave the impression that while all the members of the Board were in favour of retaining the green belt, only the non-official members were opposed to it. They wanted this to be amended.

The non-official members -- Mahabal Mishra, Virender Kasana, Ishwar Dass and Jile Singh Chauhan -- also mentioned in the letter that the Delhi Government has not been able to protect the interests of the villagers and farmers as the Governments of U. P. and Haryana have done.

"The DDA Advisory Council had (also) advised removal of the green belt and utilisation of this land for urbanisation and for bringing more prosperity to Delhi by using it for a large number of other activities," read the letter.

It was also pointed out that DDA Vice-Chairman, Mr. Maken and the Authority officials had agreed that even if the green belt concept was retained, the villages would be allowed to carry out activities like motels, software parks, education centres and food joints.
