Police suspect iron balls were meant for LTTE

Begin probe into Sivakaran's antecedents

CHENNAI: Sivakaran alias Siva of Eralai South, Jaffna, who was arrested here for allegedly attempting to smuggle iron balls to Sri Lanka, is suspected to have sent similar consignments to the island nation in the past.

Following interrogation of Sivakaran, the police suspect that the material seized on Tuesday was meant for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The police have begun probing antecedents of Sivakaran and the Q Branch CID was to move the court seeking his police custody, a police officer said, when contacted.

The antecedents of Selvasenthan of Jaffna, Sathish of Batticaloa, Karan of Killinochchi and Bharathidasan of Jaffna, also Sri Lankan Tamils who were arrested along with Sivakaran, were being looked into. Sivakaran came to India as a refugee in 2000 and stayed in the Mandapam camp till 2002. Later, he left the camp, police said.

During investigation, the police came to know that three consignments of iron balls were sent to the island nation in the last couple of months.

The Q branch CID has registered a case under section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) IPC, sections 10 and 13 (1) (2) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, section 5 of Explosive Substances Act and section 14 of the Foreigners Act.
