Governor greets people on R-Day

HYDERABAD: Governor Rameshwar Thakur has called upon the people of the State to rededicate themselves to build a knowledge society. Greeting the people on the eve of the 58th Republic Day, the Governor said while the country achieved a great deal in the past five-and-a-half decades, there was no denying the fact that a lot more remained to be done. In a message, TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu also greeted the people. - Special Correspondent

Transco staff locked up by villagers

Sangareddy: Farmers of Rudraram village in Mirdoddi mandal locked up the Transco staff in the Panchayat office protesting against erratic power supply. The five-member Transco team arrived at the village to collect power bill arrears. Alleging excess billing and irregular power supply, they confined them and were allowed to leave only after they assured quality power supply. - Staff Reporter

Revised counselling schedule for B.Ed

HYDERABAD: The centralised counselling for B. Ed admissions for the year 2006-07 will begin from February 3 instead of January 27, the Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education announced here on Thursday. A press release said a revised schedule for counselling commencing from February 3 would be issued soon. - Special Correspondent

High Court postings

HYDERBAD: M. Satyanarayana Murthy, Additional Chief Judge, City Small Causes Court, Hyderabad on deputation has been appointed as Registrar (Management), High Court of Andhra Pradesh, in place of G. Krishna Mohan Reddy until further orders, according to a press release. - Special Correspondent

PG medical admissions

VIJAYAWADA: Eligible candidates can apply for admission into medical and dental P.G. degree and diploma courses for 2007-08. The admissions are for MD, MS, PG diploma and MDS courses. The seats are available in colleges, which are affiliated to Dr. NTR University of Health Sciences.

Entrance test will be conducted on March 9. A separate test will be conducted for those seeking admission into MDS course the same day, according to university registrar P. Jayakar Babu. - Staff Reporter

AU professors suspended

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Executive Council of Andhra University at its meeting here on Thursday suspended a professor of School of Distance Education P. Krishna Prasad and an Associate Professor of Department of Zoology C. Manjulatha on disciplinary grounds.

Sarpanch's death triggers protest

KURNOOL: The death of a woman sarpanch in a private hospital triggered a protest at Kodumur in Kurnool district on Thursday. The police arrested gynaecologist Qubrunnisa on the charge of negligence. Kumari, (30), sarpanch of Dharmavaram in Dhone mandal, was admitted to a private hospital for delivery of second child on Wednesday.

MLC aspirant hurt in mishap

KURNOOL: V. Janardhan Reddy, correspondent of Kattamanchi group of institutions, and three others were hurt in a road accident near Atmakur when their vehicle hit an APSRTC bus on Thursday. Mr. Reddy and V. Krishna Murthy of Vavilala Educational Institutions were on their way to Nandyal when the mishap occurred. They were canvassing for Mr. Reddy, who is aspiring to contest the Legislative Council election. — Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI: In connection with the Republic Day, the Regional Science Centre is organising a special quiz on `Science and general knowledge' at its premises on Friday at 11 a.m. Two students from each school can take part. Prizes will be there for audience too. — Staff Reporter

Four-lane highway

CHITTOOR: The first national highway with four lines will be constructed in the district soon, according to S. S. Rawath, Collector. He told media persons here on Thursday that the road starting from Kalur village in Tirupati rural mandal up to the border area of Tamil Nadu in Nagari mandal to a length of 66.6 km would be converted into four line with an amount of Rs. 350 crores. .— Correspondent

Records of temple lands sought

Madanapalle: Sub Collector of Madanapalle A. Babu has ordered Mandal Revenue Officer Ramalakshmi of Kurabalakota to submit the records of Sri Venugopalswamy temple of Thettu. Temple trustee chairman K. Jagannatha Reddy has requested the Sub Collector to identify the lands in Thettu village as they have been encroached in some places.— Correspondent
