Agitation threat over IIT issue

It will be easier for students to travel everyday

Sangareddy: Telangana Rashtra Samithi dissident legislator T. Jayprakash Reddy has threatened to launch an agitation if IIT is denied to Medak district.

Speaking to mediapersons, Mr. Jayaprakash Reddy, who sat on a hunger strike in front of the Revenue Divisional Office on Thursday, said that he would urge the three-member committee constituted by the State Government to recognise the potential of the district and take a decision. "However, people of Medak have decided not to accept the committee's recommendations if they were against the interest of the district," he said. Citing the example of engineering colleges initially set up in rural areas but were later shifted to Medak district, particularly to the bordering villages of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, Mr. Jayaprakash Reddy said that the colleges had incurred heavy losses as faculty and students were not willing to travel long distances everyday.

A large number of students from the local MNR Medical College, dental and nursing colleges announced their solidarity to the MLA. Students organised a rally to the venue and raised slogans demanding IIT for Medak district. Administrative manager of MNR College U. Peddanna said that other educational institutions in the vicinity of Sangareddy wanted IIT here, as it would bring recognition to the locality. Second year Pharma student Kiranmai opined no engineering college could match the stature of IIT and the chance given by the Chief Minister should not be wasted. Meanwhile, the Medak unit of Bahujan Samaj Party launched a poster campaign demanding the resignation of people's representatives if the venue was shifted out of Medak. Sadasivapet Municipal Chairperson Kotagolla Anuradha, Sangareddy Municipal Vice-Chairman Jalaluddin Baba and a large number of TJR Yuva Sena participated in the hunger strike.
