MANGALORE: A police team headed by Mangalore Rural Circle Police Inspector Jayanth V. Shetty has arrested one person in connection with the death of a woman in a lodge in Ullal on January 7. The accused, who was reportedly planning to escape to Dubai and had obtained visa and air tickets, was arrested in Dongri in Mumbai on Tuesday. Superintendent of Police B. Dayananda told presspersons here on Thursday that the woman had allegedly been strangulated by the accused who had identified himself to the lodge staff as her husband. The only lead the police had was a small piece of crumpled paper and a challan of Dongri-based Development Credit Bank that they found near a washbasin at the lodge. The team used the challan to locate the bank's branch that had issued it, and obtained the identity of the accused from the bank authorities, Mr. Dayananda said. He has been identified as Mohideen Kutti Pandelu (34) from Kasargod in Kerala who had settled down in Mumbai. The team, armed with his address and cellphone number, were able to track him down with the help of local police. Mr. Dayananda said the police had seized from Mohideen his passport, visa and an air ticket to Dubai. The accused, a travel agent in Mumbai, revealed during interrogation that the victim was Ayesha (23), his third wife, police said. His other wives live in Kasargod and Mumbai. He allegedly killed Ayesha, who was from Hyderabad, as he was unable to settle his growing differences with her. Mohideen had served her liquor laced with sleeping tablets and later strangulated her with her veil. He had purchased the sleeping tablets in Mumbai and wrapped them in the bank challan, Mr. Dayananda said. The accused was brought to Mangalore and produced before the jurisdictional magistrate on Thursday. He has been remanded in judicial custody for 15 days.
