Anakaputhur road renamed in slain officer's honour

TAMBARAM : It was a proud moment on Thursday night for the relatives and friends of the late Lt. N. Parthiban, whose name figured in the `Keerthi Chakra' award list for gallantry.

The officer's parents live in suburban Anakaputhur.

As the news spread, Thamil Selvi, his mother, said "We felt proud when information reached us. We sent him to serve the nation," she said.

"We would have been much happier if he were alive to receive the gallantry award," Ms. Thamil Selvi said. Lt. Parthiban's father Major V. Natarajan described his son's sacrifice as exemplary. Major Natarajan retired from the Corps of Signals a couple of years ago.

Lt. Parthiban passed out of the Officers Training Academy on March 18 last year and belonged to 5 JAK LI (Light Infantry) Regiment. A Physics graduate from Bishop Heber College, Tiruchi, Lt. Parthiban joins another former student from the college, Lt. Sahaya Selvaraj in winning a gallantry award posthumously. Lt. Selvaraj was killed in Jammu and Kashmir in 2003 and was awarded the Sena Medal, said J. Samuel, a senior of Lt. Parthiban in Bishop Heber by one year.

"He was very patriotic, completely committed to any work he took up and ever willing to teach and help others," he said, describing Lt. Parthiban's nature.

Only a few days back, the Anakaputhur municipal council, gave unanimous consent to rename Anakaputhur First Main Road as "Lt. Parthiban Saalai."

Bharathi Kumar, Municipal Chairperson said the martyred officer deserved the honour. A photo of the officer was unveiled at the Anakaputhur Government School recently.
