`Rs. 30 crores allotted for sports'

VIJAYAWADA: Amidst soaring balloons, doves and bursting of crackers, the 27th Cherukuri Volga Memorial Senior National Archery Championship was declared open by chief guest N. Nageswara Rao, vice-chairman and MD of the Sports Authority of AP , at Siddhartha Medical College grounds on Thursday.

The inaugural ceremony showcased several cultural programmes and a colourful march past. But the one that impressed most was the dance ballet depicting how Arjuna secured `Paasupathaastram', the all-powerful bow, from lord Shiva.

Mr. Nageswara Rao appreciated the AP Archery Association and the Krishna District Archery Association for organising the event. "The State Government is keen on promoting sports and games in the State and every year Rs. 30 crores is allotted for sports," he explained.
