BANGALORE: Wonder why college brochures highlight cafeterias so much? Why the claim of good food and hygienic conditions? Because, for a student, as we all know, a cafeteria is much more than a place to eat. It's a place to make friends, to gossip and discuss issues threadbare, to share problems, to laugh, and even to escape a boring class. College canteens, no doubt, have an upbeat crowd at any given point of time. Skipping breakfast at home is a habit with most youngsters. Canteens help students grab a quick bite before the bell goes. "The food is good. Every one comes here to know about the day-to-day developments," says Bivin Varkey Benny from Garden City College. "To have fun and to get together, you should have a canteen," says Ashok Shah of the same college. Canteens break the monotony and help students and lecturers relax after long class hours.
Party corner
Small birthday parties and treats find their place in cafeterias. Some cafeterias even have a mid-day newspaper. In most colleges, students are allowed to use cell phones in college canteens though they are banned elsewhere. Neha Podar from Christ College talks about her very strict but well-maintained canteen. "I V Hall" serves all types of food. Here, hanging around for fun during class hours is not permitted. You also have a stationery shop here. Students say they can even study in the canteen. M.S. Ramaiah College has started a new cafeteria now along with the old ones. "It is good that the administration has understood the need for such a canteen on the campus," says Sunu Verghese of the college.
