KOCHI: A `Human Rights Vigil' will be held at Gandhi Square on Durbar Hall Road in Kochi between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Republic Day. In a statement here on Wednesday, former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer described this as "a fitting way of rededicating ourselves to the Constitution of India which enshrines basic human rights." The statement says: "Though 56 years have elapsed since the Republic came into being, violations of human rights are a daily occurrence in every part of our country. Women are kept under subjugation; children are treated with total cruelty; farmers live in such utter poverty that they commit suicide and generally an atmosphere of corruption and decay of all arms of the State leading to the breakdown of law and order prevail in the country. There is also the constant and increasing threat to our national sovereignty by neo-colonialism and an unfair international economic and political order. People everywhere should raise their voice to focus attention on all violations of human rights and should rededicate themselves to the creation of a world without wars, poverty and exploitation. I appeal to all the citizens of Kochi and all non-governmental organisations and all the leaders of society to participate in the Vigil and make a silent appeal to the conscience of humanity."
