Security stepped up

For Republic Day celebrations

KOCHI: The security for the Republic Day celebrations was increased in the city. This followed intelligence reports that Kochi was among the cities where militant attacks were expected.

A release from the office of the City Police Commissioner said that the entire police force in the city had been mobilised as part of the enhanced security arrangements for Republic Day. All vehicles coming to the city would be checked for explosives for two days from Thursday and combing operations carried out on Thursday and Friday.

Hotels and lodges were searched and those found under suspicious were being investigated on. Checking was on, with support from dog squad, at railway stations, bus terminals and boat jetty.

Hospitals and fire force personnel had been kept on alert. A quick reaction team, under the control of an Assistant Commandant, was being put on full alert. The police had taken control of Ambedkar Stadium where the Republic Day parade would be held . The public would be admitted to the stadium only after screening through metal detectors.

City Police Commissioner P. Vijayan requested the public to pass on information about bags, bundles or suitcases found abandoned or presence of strangers to phone numbers 100, 1090 or 2394650.
