Home Guards personnel to assist railway police in security duty

TIRUCHI: The Home Guards, a voluntary service organisation, whose services are used during emergency, will soon be involved in security duty at railway stations to assist Government Railway Police (GRP).

The exercise of ascertaining the willingness of Home Guards personnel, who were inclined to perform the security duty along with the GRP, has commenced in Tiruchi district. Based on a proposal from GRP authorities at Chennai, who had sought the sanction of personnel to the Railway Police, instruction has been sent to all Superintendents of Police and Commissioners of Police from the State police headquarters to ascertain the willingness of Home Guards personnel.

Sources said that the Home Guards would be utilised on rotation basis for checking baggage and platform beats.

The number of personnel in Tiruchi revenue district is 275, while in Tiruchi city is 320. Willingness forms have been circulated to around 200 personnel in the district.

About 80 of them have expressed willingness to assist the GRP. The list would be forwarded through the Superintendent of Police, who is also the Commandant of Home Guards in the district, to the authorities in Chennai, the sources said.
