No fresh permits for old model buses

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the Delhi Government not to issue fresh permits for running old model buses on Delhi roads until it came out with a new design for public transport vehicles.

A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice H. R. Malhotra passed the order while hearing a suo motu petition on media reports about deaths in road accidents in the city.

The Bench suggested to the Government to think about carrying out certain changes to the designs of buses to make them driver-friendly.

The Bench directed the Delhi traffic police to check the misuse of beacon lights, tinting of windowpanes beyond the permissible opacity and ensure mandatory wearing of helmets.

Amicus curae Gopal Subramaniam in the matter submitted that the Delhi Government was in the process of bringing out smart cards to check violation of traffic rules.

The matter will now come for hearing on January 31.

Expressing concern over the flouting of lane driving rules, the Bench said vehicles indulged in wrongful overtaking. It directed the police to see to it that the lane driving was strictly implemented.

In the report, the daily quoted traffic police statistics that said that almost every Blueline bus was challaned at least 20 times for offences like rash driving and over speeding in 2005, but the actions had failed to make drivers of these buses mend their ways.
