JNUSU bats for construction workers

NEW DELHI: Apart from handling their routine varsity affairs, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) has been running a campaign to press for minimum wages to workers engaged in various construction activities on the campus.

The Union has also been highlighting the problem of underpayment faced by sanitation workers and gardeners employed in private contract; who claim their wages were being delayed and denied.

"We were approached by some construction workers in November past year. They said they were being paid Rs. 65 instead of the promised Rs.70. We decided to take up their case," said JNUSU president Dhananjay Tripathi on Wednesday.

"When safai karamcharis and workers engaged in horticulture also came to us, we realised that the problem of underpayment is widespread. We forced the contractor and the administration to pay the minimum wages and arrears of some 70 labourers working on the campus," he added.

JNUSU will continue the campaign to fight for the workers' rights, stated Dhananjay.

Health check-up camp

NEW DELHI: A health check-up camp was organised at Chokhandi Chowk Gurdwara in Tilak Nagar by Samavaya Foundation with the help of Lion's Club of Pitampura.

Senior Congress leader R. K. Anand was the chief guest on the occasion. "Today a large number of people suffer from diabetes, but are not aware of the problem. Camps like these help people take corrective steps," he said.

Chairman of the Foundation, Jagjiwan Bakhshi, who presided over the function, said the foundation was planning to hold more such health camps across the city.
