OCCASION TO REMEMBER: Collector G. Sundaramurthi accepting the guard of honour after hoisting the National Flag on the Republic Day in Namakkal on Friday.
SALEM: Republic Day was celebrated with gaiety in Salem and Namakkal districts on Friday. At the Mahatma Gandhi Stadium grounds here Salem Collector N. Mathivanan unfurled the national flag and accepted the guard of honour. He also gave away Chief Minister's medals to policemen and honoured the freedom fighters. He distributed welfare schemes to 40 beneficiaries at an estimated cost of Rs. 25.18 lakh. Students from various schools staged cultural programmes. Salem Mayor J. Rekha Priyadarshini unfurled the tricolour at Thongum Poonga. While addressing the gathering after hoisting the flag, the Mayor said that leaders made great sacrifices to achieve the country's independence from British colonisation rule. She also distributed service awards to people belonging to various walks of life. The award winners included businessman A. B. Sudashnam, Red Cross Society Coordinator L. Raja Sunder Singh, Junior Red Cross Advisor and teacher in Salem Ammapet Corporation Boys HSS, Prabhakar, social worker Jaychand Loda, Drama artiste N. S. Kamalamani and sportspersons Angel Rose (Cluney MHSS), R. Meghala (Sri Saradha College) and J. Revathi (Holy Angels MHSS). Thirty Corporation employees, including City Engineer R. Vijayakumar, were also honoured for their good service. Republic Day also was celebrated at various places in Salem. Vice Chancellor T. Balakrishnan unfurled the flag on the Salem Periyar University campus while college correspondent M. Thangavel hoisted the flag at the Salem Sri Ganesh College of Arts and Science. At Namakkal, Collector G. Sundaramurthy hoisted the national flag and accepted the guard of honour led by the Namakkal Superintendent of Police Deepak. M. Damor on the South Boys HSS premises. He also distributed Chief Minister's medals to policemen for their exemplary services. Freedom fighters were honoured. He also distributed welfare schemes to the tune of Rs. 16,35,369 to 539 beneficiaries.
