Nanjundappa panel report should be implemented, says Sadananda Gowda

T.S. Ranganna

Wants allocation made in Budget for 20 of the 29 most backward taluks

BANGALORE: Bharatiya Janata Party State unit president D.V. Sadananda Gowda on Friday wanted Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa to implement the recommendations of the D.M. Nanjundappa Committee in 20 of the 39 most backward taluks while presenting his second budget.

Mr. Gowda, who spoke to The Hindu after unfurling the National Flag at the party office on the occasion of Republic Day, on Friday, Mr.Gowda, said Mr. Yediyurappa, who also holds the Finance portfolio, should allocate funds for the development of 20 most backward taluks. The other 29 taluks could be taken up for development in the next year's budget, Mr. Gowda said.

Asked about specific programmes for the welfare of Muslims as recommended by the Rajinder Sachar Committee, Mr. Gowda said the development programmes in the most backward taluks should cover the minority groups. The Government should strengthen the Karnataka State Minorities Development Corporation and the Karnataka State Minorities Commission to concentrate on the uplift of Muslims.

Mr. Yediyurappa had shown the way when he allocated Rs. 116 crore for the minorities in his maiden budget last year.

Rejecting the Sachar Committee recommendation for giving reservation for Muslims in jobs and education on the basis of religion, Mr. Gowda said dividing people on religious lines had played havoc with the unity and integrity of the nation. What was required was the economic criteria for reservation.

The Janata Dal (Secular)-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coalition should abolish the 4 per cent reservation given exclusively for Muslims under the backward classes tag.

Mr. Gowda, considered to be close to Mr. Yediyurappa, agreed that the Ministry expansion had caused heartburn among some senior party legislators, including women. The grouse of a few more legislators and party workers would be addressed by accommodating them in the next batch of appointments to the posts of chairmen of boards and corporations.

He said it was the duty of the BJP ministers and those who would be appointed as chairmen to fan out to the remote villages for overseeing the implementation of various programmes.

Earlier, unfurling the National Flag, Mr. Gowda exhorted party workers to keep a watch on the forces, which were working for destabilising the country.
