KOA disbands DOAs

BANGALORE: The 28-odd District Olympic Associations (DOA) have been disbanded by the Karnataka Olympic Association (KOA). KOA took this decision at a special general body meeting here on Friday and won a 37-5 verdict when it was put to vote.

The main stand of the KOA in this issue was that most of the DOAs hardly functioned in the State. They neither conducted any sports function nor regularly paid their membership fees and they stirred into action only when the KOA elections were around.

According to K. Govindaraj, President, KOA, the general body meeting of the KOA held last year, had expressed serious concerns over the issue. The members then decided to form a sub-committee to formulate suitable recommendations and take necessary action by convening a special AGM.

"We have done that accordingly and it was a decision of the majority and we have not taken any arbitrary action," clarified the KOA chief, who also pointed out that District associations seemed to have become redundant, considering the fact that most sports associations have their own District units and they conduct the sports meets in their respective disciplines.

Action draws flak

The KOA decision has certainly not gone well with certain sections of the State sports fraternity. Later at a media meet convened by K. Nandakumar, Secretary, Karnataka Volleyball Association, some ticklish queries were raised by those who opposed it. Is it the KOA or the Bangalore Olympic Association anymore? District units are being scrapped for non-functioning, but is the KOA functioning well? Has it not been granted the Youth Games umpteen times and not yet been able to hold it once? detractors asked.

Hasn't the present KOA equally responsible for the District units' non-functioning? As a parent body, the KOA should have pulled up the non-functionaries and made them accountable for the same, they argued. It was also pointed out that there was also a proposal to hike the fees to Rs. 20,000 from the existing Rs. 1,000. That proposals were ruled out and it was revised to Rs. 10,000. — Special Correspondent
