Letters to the Editor
The article "India's dysfunctional police" (Jan. 26) has given a comprehensive account of what ails our force. The police can do a remarkable job if they are free from political interference. Insulating them from political interference and paying them well are among the pressing reforms that are the need of the hour.
C.S. Ramalingam,
* * * I hope it is not a desperate wish to hope for an independent force in all States and a federal investigative agency that is at once autonomous and unyielding to political pressures. By allowing democracy to be stretched to ridiculous lengths, we are paying a heavy price. Politicians of questionable backgrounds use both the police and the CBI to serve their vested interests. Yes, there should be an independent ombudsman to look into the complaints against the police. There is no other way to help the common man.
