NEYVELI: The operation and maintenance expenditure incurred by Neyveli Lignite Corporation on Thermal Power Stations I and II have exceeded the limits prescribed by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC). If the production costs are not limited within the stipulated level, they will pose a challenge to the viability of the Corporation, according to S. Jayaraman, Chairman and Managing Director of NLC. Mr. Jayaraman made this observation while addressing the Republic Day function on the NLC campus. The CERC had pegged the production cost for one megawatt of electricity for TPS-I at Rs.15.81 lakh, and for TPS-II at Rs.10.82 lakh. But, during 2005-2006, the Corporation incurred an expenditure of Rs.16.75 lakh and Rs.11.11 lakh. The CMD noted that despite India attaining the 12th place in world economy, it was yet to eradicate poverty. It could be possible only when the economic growth was sustained at 8-10 per cent over the next 25 years and power generation raised from 1,25,000 MW to 8,00,000 MW, he said.
