Bangalore: In response to the report "Trauma care centre in sorry state" in The Hindu dated January 24, the Director of the Sanjay Gandhi Accident Hospital and Research Institute writes: "It is stated in the news item that the rate of bed occupancy is 30-35 per cent. It is erroneous and misleading. The rate of bed occupancy ranges from 60-65 per cent. "It is noted in the news item that 53 doctors posts are vacant. It is not correct. In addition to permanent doctors we have appointed consultants on ad hoc basis, thereby totally we have 37 doctors in the hospital. The vacant posts are 41. "The news item says that 39 posts of paramedical staffs are vacant. It it also erroneous. Totally there are 70 paramedical staff in the hospital. The tender process for acquiring various types of equipment and instruments for day-to-day usage in the hospital is in the final stage. It is wrong to say only three or four emergency cases are received in this hospital. In fact, we are daily getting 10-15 emergency cases. "Tenders have been floated to procure CT scanner machine. It will be installed soon." The Public Eye team responds: We have said that there are 53 vacant posts. We have quoted the Director as saying that 12 of them were hired on contract. That leaves 41 vacancies. It is a matter of some regret that the only government trauma care hospital in the State is acquiring routine equipment and a CT scanner 10 years after the hospital was started. The Director himself told this newspaper that the hospital was receiving an average of two to three emergency cases.
