A treat for lovers of Hindustani music

Govind D. Belgaumkar

BANGALORE: Republic Day got off to a great start for a few Hindustani music lovers who were lucky to be at Chitrakala Parishath to listen to the morning ragas by vocalist Sanjeev Abhyankar.

"I think it is absolutely an ideal morning concert atmosphere," the singer pointed out.

The audience could not have agreed more. It was only apt that the cloudy morning saw him begin with the Raga Ahir Bhairav with the composition in which a lovelorn woman complains that the clouds were refusing to carry the message of her pain to her loved one (Meghava sataaye manare... ).

This part was sung in drut (fast-paced rendition of the Raga). The vilambit (slow rendition) began with "Rasiya va... "

Vishwanath Nakod was on tabla and Vyasamurthi Katti on the harmonium. The Rajguru Smruthi run by Parameshwar Hegde had organised the event which was aptly titled "Sur Prabhat."

Mr. Abhyankar's low-octave beginning of the Bhatiar with "Uchatagayo nindiya" glided in a facile movement across the higher octave that gave it a brooding quality.

The effective way in which he brought to the fore the plight of a girl separated from lover with the line "Jo mai jaanati aisi, preeta na karati" won people's hearts.

Mr. Abhyankar pointed out: "Some ragas appear simple, but are difficult to sing. Bhatiar is one of them."

The excellent and soothing taans in Raga Charukeshi with the composition, "Morey mana tose lagere... " followed by the hori "Aaaja maaye Mohana khelata hori..." took the concert to its pinnacle.

He concluded his recital in Raga Sindhu Bhairavi with the composition "... Uddhav jog shikhaavana aaye... "
