Welfare of the physically challenged

Kripa vocational training and rehabilitation centre for the physically challenged is aimed at the welfare of those from the lower economic strata of society

Lending a helping hand to the physically challenged has been a fruitful experience to the Kerala Rehabilitation Institute for the Physically Affected (Kripa), Aluva.

The institute, functioning in collaboration with the Rajagiri institutions, has provided training to scores of disabled people.

Started 25 years ago, the Kripa vocational training and rehabilitation centre for the physically challenged is mainly aimed at the welfare of those from the lower economic strata of society. It is meant to be a home away from home, providing vocational training and assistance for placement, K. Mathew, one of the directors of the centre, says.

The industrial training centre of Kripa, approved by the National Council for Vocational Training, offers courses under various technical wings. To equip candidates with the latest technology, training is given in information technology, in addition to the basic course.

That apart, non-formal courses are conducted so that those with aptitude can take up suitable work to earn a living. The training focusses on assembling and servicing of electronic systems and devices such as TV, audio and video recorders, emergency lamps and voltage stabilisers.

Community-based rehabilitation, information centre on disability and human resource inventory of the physically challenged are among the projects to be taken up by the institute, Mr. Mathew says.

The institute is organising a valedictory function of its year-long silver jubilee celebrations on Sunday. Minister for Fisheries S. Sarma will be the chief guest. A souvenir will be released on the occasion.
