Psychometric assessment training for teachers

COIMBATORE: Psychometric assessment of teachers is essential because it will help them be good mentors to students who are under their care, P. Thirumalvalavan, Registrar of Bharathiar University said here recently.

Programmes

Inaugurating a two-day workshop organised by the Department of Psychology for college teachers on `Psychometric assessment and mentoring the students' at the PSG College of Arts and Science, he urged the Department to conduct more such programmes and also identify more areas that need help in mentoring the students.

Participants

The workshop had 27 teaching staff. Sessions were designed on both the aspects of pyschometric assessment as well as that of mentoring. Resource persons addressed the participants on topics like psychology of adolescence, emotional intelligence and aptitude, stress management, effective interpersonal relationship, adolescent problems and counselling. R. Balakrishnan, Head of the Department said: "This is the first time we have organised such a programme for our staff. This is to enable them to look within themselves and make a self assessment. Only when they have assessed themselves, can they efficiently help college students cope with the adolescent problems and assist them in the transition period from school to college."

In addition to the lectures, there were also group discussions and solving of problems in groups. Similar programmes were planned by the Department, for the rest of the faculty.
