"40 p.c. of ailments are tobacco-related"

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: More than 40 per cent of health problems in the country are tobacco-related, and the youth should refrain from such addictions, Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said on Saturday.

The after-effects of globalisation and rapid economic growth were cultural deterioration among the youth, who were moving towards the "bad side of culture," and the explosion of lifestyle-related diseases, he said, delivering the 79th convocation address at Loyola College.

The World Health Organisation had warned that India would face one of its biggest challenges in the coming years in coping with lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, cardiac ailments and mental illness. HIV/AIDS was evolving into not just a health problem but an economic and social problem.

Two Indias co-existed: one of malnutrition and under nourishment and the other of over-nourishment, which led to problems such as obesity. Alcoholism was also on the rise among youngsters, Dr. Ramadoss said.
