Puducherry
Special Correspondent
Puducherry: The Puducherry unit of Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) has called upon the Government to tone up the health delivery system in rural areas by augmenting facilities in villages. The president of the party here, M. Visweswaran, said on Saturday that a large number of villagers were making a beeline to the Government hospitals in urban locations. The Government should either expand primary health centres or sub-centres or augment facilities. He pointed out that instead of drawing plans properly, the Government was constructing a medical college and hospital in a congested location. Already the traffic snarls were posing inconvenience to the people, and locating a hospital there would further aggravate it. There was difficulty in getting assured supply of potable water in a number of residential colonies in Puducherry. The water available in some of these areas was sub-standard. He appealed to the authorities to work out a long perspective plan and ensure that no section of residents faced hardship in getting good and sufficient quantity of water. He said that the BJP would never let the Centre to convert JIPMER into an autonomous institution. He said that the party volunteers would observe a 12-hour fast simultaneously at various places in Puducherry highlighting these demands.
