NEYVELI: Tamil scholars, academics and officials of Neyveli Lignite Corporation have jointly formed Neyveli Tamil Sangham with the objective of popularising Tamil literature among the modern generation and to propagate its ideals towards creating an egalitarian society, free from caste, communal, racial, gender and economical prejudices. Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, the Sangham president K.V. Gopalakrishnan, secretary C. Duraikannu and executive committee member Marungur C. Rengarajan said since Tamil literature was not taken to the people at large in its pristine form, the lofty ideals stated in the literary works were lost to humanity. The objective of the Sangham would be to preserve and nurture ancient Tamil culture and to honour the writers and authors who had done yeomen service to the language and literature. Every year, the Sangham would honour Tamil scholars, social activists and educationists, and arrange for seminars and lectures by renowned litterateurs. The Sangham, in coordination with writers and publishers, would bring out books that would reflect the true Tamil spirit. It would also periodically conduct competitions to foster love for Tamil literature among school and college students. Rengarajan, Principal of Jawahar Science College, said though the annual book fair used to attract a large number of book-lovers, only a fraction of them sought Tamil literary works, and a vast majority of them plumped for publications on spirituality, vaasthu and recipe books. The Sangham would also broadbase its activity by conducting coaching classes for those who aspire to write the civil services examinations in Tamil language, they said. To mark the formal inauguration of the Sangham, literary talks would be organised for three days from February 2 to 3 to be delivered by Nellai Kannan and Tamilaruvi Manian at the NLC Training Complex, Neyveli. The NLC management was extending its patronage to the Sangham, they added.
