NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist), which is contesting six Assembly seats in Uttarakhand, said Biman Basu, Chairman of the Left Front in West Bengal, would campaign for the party in Uddham Singh Nagar area. The CPI (M) has decided to field Sunil Haldar from Pantnagar seat and hopes to expand its base in the district which has a sizeable presence of people from Bengal. Party Polit Bureau Member Brinda Karat said Mr. Basu has been requested to join the campaign for the CPI (M) candidate. The other candidates declared by the party State Secretary Vijay Rana are Gangadhar Nautiyal (Kedarnath), Virendra Mingwal (Karanprayag), Ranvir Singh Rana (Tehri), Sher Singh Rana (Pratap Nagar) and Sher Singh (Sashaspur). In Kedarnath, both the CPI (M) and the CPI will be contesting against each other. Despite efforts from the Central leadership, the issue could not be resolved with the State Unit of the CPI claiming the right to contest. The effort to have an understanding with the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal also came a cropper. In the 2002 Assembly polls, the CPI's Jai Narayan had polled 1,807 votes as against Mr. Gangadhar Nautiyal who secured 1,083 votes. Bharatiya Janata Party won the seat. The CPI (M) is contesting four seats in the Hills and two in the plains. The CPI is contesting five Assembly seats.
