SRINAGAR: As part of an initiative to teach Kashmiri at primary and middle levels in school, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has decided to set up a dedicated telephone line to monitor implementation of the scheme. At a meeting of senior officers, intellectuals and writers convened to review the National Conference Government's decision in 2000 to introduce Kashmiri at the primary and middle levels in school, the Director of School Education for Kashmir, Mohammad Rafi, said the department was "very serious in implementing the decision." Mr. Rafi said "Helpline Kashmiri" would soon be set up at the Directorate of Education and "all suggestions on the issue would be taken note of and discussed."
Training for teachers
The Director said a 12-member committee, comprising writers, officials and members of NGOs, would be constituted to monitor the progress of the scheme. He said teachers would be given four-day special training in the language. The meeting also saw the participation of representatives of the Private School Co-ordination Committee. They claimed that private schools too would take steps to implement the Government decision. "It is our responsibility to follow the order and it is false propaganda that private schools are shying away from teaching the mother tongue," C.L. Vishen, president of the committee, said.
