Maran releases TNCA commemorative stamp

CHENNAI: Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran on Friday released a commemorative postal stamp and a book titled "The Romance of Tamil Nadu Cricket" to mark the platinum jubilee of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk here.

The Minister handed over the first stamp to Indian cricket captain Rahul Dravid and the first copy of the book to master batsman Sachin Tendulkar. In his address, Mr. Maran recalled his visits to the Chepauk stadium during his childhood to watch India — West Indies encounters. He appreciated the efforts made by TNCA to provide the best facilities possible for players and said the newly refurbished dressing rooms were up to the "standards of a five-star hotel". Mr. Maran said DMK chief and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi would have loved to be present at the function to interact with the players. Mr. Maran also traced the roots of cricket in Chennai. "I am intrigued to learn that the British sailors had brought cricket to the city and played against the local teams at the Island Grounds (situated near the Chepauk Stadium). The locals then started the Madras United Cricket Club to teach the sailors a lesson."

Rahul Dravid appreciated the efforts of TNCA is producing great talent over the years. Sachin Tendulkar said the ground was undoubtedly his most favourite cricket venue in the world.

The commemorative book has been written by former cricketer V. Ramanarayanan.
