SRM team's research on earthquakes

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Researchers and students of SRM Engineering College have taken up a challenge.

A research team under Ponnavaikko, director, research, Virtual Education and International Initiatives, SRM University, has been working on `How earthquakes occur' and ways to prevent them. The study was taken up based on theories proposed by Shamsuddin, who claims to have studied the earthquake phenomenon for long. The team recently sent the project report to international science journals such as `Nature' and `Science' for publication.

The investigation by team members challenged the scientist's postulation that earthquakes are not caused by `plate tectonics' (a widely accepted theory of geology that was developed to explain large scale motions of the earth's crust), he said.

The team, he said, has also worked out the cost for the mechanism to prevent earthquakes.
