Spiritual leaders go on a day's fast

Special Correspondent

Evangelical activities in Tirumala opposed

KURNOOL: Sri Vidyaranya Swami of Humpi Peetham and 200 others undertook one-day fast at Sri Satyanarayana Swamy temple here on Saturday seeking restoration of `Hindu dharma' at the TTD.

The protest was organised as part of the call given by the head of Pejavar Mutt to protect Tirupati temple.

Mr. Nagendra Prasad, who organised the protest here, said the TTD made certain promises to spiritual heads some time back to initiate some steps to restore the conventions and traditions.

But the TTD was dragging its feet to check propagation of non-Hindu religious ideology and sending out non-Hindu employees, he alleged.

K.B. Somayajulu, M.D.Y. Ramamurthy and others were present.

Chittoor Correspondent adds: The activists of Tirumala Tirupathi Samrakshana Samithi undertook fast for a day here at Gandhi statue on Prakasam road on Saturday.

Their demands include action against those indulging in missionary activities. Further, the hundi amount of Venkateswara temple, Tirumala, should be utilised only for `dharma pracharam'.

President Narendra and secretary Duggani Jayaram, among others, participated in the programme.

Legislator A.S. Manohar visited the fasting camp and expressed his support to the demands of fasting activists.

Enact law

Anantapur Staff Reporter writes: Tirumala Tirupati Samrakshana Samithi staged a mass fasting protest in front of the RDO's office here alleging that the State Government has failed in keeping its word on stopping evangelical activities on the seven hills.

They reiterated the demand for introducing an Act banning evangelical activities on Tirumala and the surrounding areas.

They also urged the Government to utilise the TTD funds only on activities of spreading Hindu dharma. They also demanded identification of 250 sq. kms of area comprising seven hills, including Tirumala and Tirupati, as the property of Lord Venketshwara.
