Mayor, Congress corporators in a celebratory mood

  • Sanction possible because of Congress in power: Mayor
  • Scheme will help replace the 70-year-old pipeline in city

SHARING JOY: Mayor S. Raghurami Reddy and corporators are all smiles following the clearance to water supply scheme in Kurnool on Saturday.

KURNOOL: Mayor S. Raghurami Reddy and Congress corporators on Saturday celebrated the sanction of Rs. 42-crore drinking water supply improvement scheme for Kurnool city from the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium towns (UIDSSMT). Kotla Jayasuryaprakasa Reddy, MP, was also present

The elected representatives of the Congress took exception to M.A. Gafoor, CPI(M) MLA, for trying to project him as the one who got the scheme sanctioned.

They said in fact the CPI (M) had indulged in mudslinging when the corporators were on a tour of north India to lobby with the Union Ministry of Urban Development for sanction of the scheme. The Mayor said sanction the scheme was possible because of the Congress being in power in the corporation, State and the Centre.

Union Minister for Urban Development S. Jaipal Reddy and Mr. Jayasuryaprakasa Reddy discussed the subject several times, which helped in the sanctioning of the scheme. The Mayor said they would be happy if Mr. Gafoor got some other new scheme for the city but it would be unfair on his part to claim credit for this scheme.

    MP's promise

He said the MP promised to get schemes worth Rs. 200 crores sanctioned for the city through the Urban Development Ministry, if viable schemes were designed and projected. Comprehensive underground drainage scheme was on the agenda , Mr. Raghurami Reddy said.

The MP said construction of Vijayawada-Bellary National Highway via Kurnool was taken up with the Union Ministry of Surface Transport.
