National cross-country championship today

VISAKHAPATNAM: The 41st National cross-country championship will be organised by the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant at the Ukku Stadium here on Sunday, the Chairman and Managing Director of VSP, Y. Siva Sagar Rao, said at a press conference here on Saturday.

The event is being conducted as part of the silver jubilee celebrations of the VSP and 10 internationals and 100 national-level athletes are among the 800 participants in the event being held in Visakhapatnam for the first time.

The championship trophy is named the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited Silver Jubilee Trophy.

The Indian team for the World championships in Osaka (Japan) during April would be selected during this meet.

Events will be held in 12km and 4km for men, 8km and 4km for women, 8 km for junior men (under-20) and 6km for junior women (under-29). Apart from this to popularise long distance running among the youth, the following races will be introduced. 6km, 3km and 2km races for boys Under-18, 16 and 14 and 4km, 3km and 2km races for girls under the same age groups.

The internationals participating in the championship are Bhairav Singh Doni, Ram Bahadur Subba, T. Nagendra Rao, Kasi Nath Atawli, Surendra Kumar, Sunil Kumar, Aruna Devi, Reena Das, Pumpa Chanda and Vyshali Thatre.

Services and Railways won the men and women's team championships respectively in the 40th National championships in Pune last year.
