KOCHI: Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T.R. Baalu will inaugurate the construction work on the connectivity for the proposed International Container Transshipment Terminal on Vallarpadam Island on February 9. The inauguration is scheduled at 11 a.m. This is in keeping with the Cochin Port Trust deciding to launch work on the connectivity projects ahead of schedule, said a press release from the Port Trust here on Saturday. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will be the chief guest at the inaugural function. Earlier this month, the Public Investment Board (PIB) of Government of India had, in two separate sittings, cleared investment of Rs.525 crore for the construction of the four-lane National Highway link from Vallarpadam to Kalamassery and Rs.245 crore for the rail link from Vallarpadam to Edappally Railway Station. The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs is expected to give the formal clearance for these investments shortly, said the press release. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is to carry out construction of the 17.5-km National Highway link and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) will undertake construction of the 8.8-km rail connectivity. Although the land acquisition proceedings for these projects are likely to take some more time, it has been decided to commence work in the backwater and other areas where the land is already in possession of the Port Trust or the Government agencies.
