Coimbatore: Forest officials, with the help of a group of volunteers, have rescued a panther and a spotted deer from two wells at Talamalai and KN Palayam in Erode district. On receiving information that the panther had fallen into a 60-foot deep well at Talamalai, Erode District Conservator of Forests P. Durairasu and Divisional Forest Officer S. Ramasubramanian deputed a team. Conservator of Forests, Coimbatore Circle, P.C. Tyagi, also despatched a team of veterinary doctors to tranquillise the animal. The three-year old female panther, on seeing a huge crowd, hid in a small cave inside the well. The team, with the help of Coimbatore District Forest and Environment Protection Society volunteers, cleared the crowd.
Makeshift ladder
Then a makeshift ladder made of bamboo and wooden logs with rope was placed into the well. Around midnight on Friday, the panther climbed up and escaped into the Talamalai reserve forests. As the rescue teams were returning to Coimbatore on Saturday, they received information that a spotted deer had fallen into a small well at KN Palayam. Manoharan, a veterinary doctor, tranquillised the animal using a blow dart. It was then rescued from the well.
