CHENNAI: Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss has called upon the State Government to ensure that all government orders (GOs) are issued in Tamil.

Presiding over the launch of a new movement to retrieve the ethnic pride of Tamils here on Saturday, he said unless the Government started issuing Tamil GOs in three months, volunteers of the movement would identify the authority concerned and hold peaceful picketing.

Tamil Nadu's official communications to the Centre, which are usually in English, must be accompanied by a Tamil translation.

Only Tamil

The medium of instruction up to Plus Two should be in Tamil only, Dr. Ramadoss said. Other languages, including English and Hindi, could be taught from standard VI. Reiterating that he was not an enemy of the English language, the PMK leader said efforts must be made to impart speaking and writing skills in English.

The PMK-affiliated movement - Tamil Ina Maanam Meetpu Iyakkam (Tamil Ethnic Pride Retrieval Movement) - would strive to answer issues such as mushrooming of English medium schools in various parts of the State.

On the 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Communities in higher education, Dr. Ramadoss said it was a shame that none of the leaders at the national as well as the State-level had voiced their concern at the move to implement it in phases.

300 volunteers trained

He said over 300 volunteers of the movement were given training for about 18 months.

The forum would fight for retrieval of cultural and linguistic pride of Tamils in association with like-minded organisations.

While parliamentarian Era. Chezhian said it was a welcome attempt to restore, protect and safeguard the self-respect of Tamils, former Speaker of Tamil Nadu Assembly K. Rajaram wanted the forum to institute awards to honour Tamil authors.

Launching the movement, V. Anaimuthu, general secretary of Marxist-Periyarist Socialist Party, said Tamils must wake up to the threat to their language, culture and civilisation.
