"Move to demolish bridge unacceptable"

CHENNAI: The damage being caused to Adam's Bridge, which was historically known as `Ramar Paalam,' in the guise of Sethusamudram canal project must be stopped, former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has said.

In a statement here on Saturday, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the historical significance of Ramar Paalam in the Palk Strait region had been confirmed by a NASA study, and added that the move to demolish it for the proposed project was unacceptable.

Claiming that fishermen in the southern districts were still agitating against the Sethu project, Ms. Jayalalithaa said attempts were being made to destroy the livelihood, ecology and footprints of history only to enrich contractors and those who were in a position to award contracts.

Claiming that warnings of danger to marine species had come true, the AIADMK general secretary said ships using the canal would spend more time and fuel as compared to the present circuitous route. She also said she would approach the court against the project. — Special Correspondent

CPI welcomes decision

CHENNAI: While welcoming the deletion of certain clauses in the order relating to patient welfare societies in Primary Health Centres/Government Hospitals, the CPI on Saturday said the government should effect more changes after holding discussions with those concerned.

In a statement, the party's State secretary, D.Pandian, said there was a view among doctors that patient welfare societies were not needed. There was also information that there were no such societies in PHCs in Kerala. — Special Correspondent

Protest against nuclear project

TIRUNELVELI: A total of 1,356 persons, including 598 women, courted arrest on Saturday when they tried to rush towards the main entrance of the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP), protesting construction of nuclear reactors.

The protesters, led by Koodankulam panchayat president P. Ezhilarasu (AIADMK), tried to block a bus carrying the project workers. There was an altercation between the police and the protesters when the latter tried to make their way forcibly. The windscreen of a police vehicle was smashed by the protesters, prompting the police to use mild force to disperse them. They were released in the evening. — Staff Reporter

Special trains to Tiruchi

CHENNAI: Southern Railway will run following special trains between Chennai Egmore and

Tiruchirapalli to clear the extra rush of passengers.

Train No. 0678 will leave Tiruchirapalli at 11 pm on January 28 (Sunday) and arrive at Chennai Egmore at 9.45 am the next day. In the opposite direction, Train No.0677 will leave Egmore at 11.15 pm on January 29 (Monday) and reach Tiruchirapalli at 6.15 am the next day.

The trains will stop at Srirangam, Ariyalur, Vriddhachalam, Villupuram,Tindivanam, Chengalpattu and Tambaram. Train No. 0678 will stop at Mambalam also.

Advance reservation for the above trains will commence on January 28, according to a Southern Railway press release. — Special Correspondent

Cauvery Family to meet in Mandya

NAGAPATTINAM: The eighth meeting of the committee of Cauvery Family will be held on January 31 at Mandya in Karnataka. Ramaswami R. Iyer, Secretary (Retd.), Ministry of Water Resources and Adviser to the Cauvery Family, will participate.

S. Janakarajan of Madras Institute of Development Studies will be the facilitator, said S. Ranganathan, general secretary of the Cauvery Delta Farmers' Welfare Association, here on Saturday.

Four sent to Mandapam camp

PUDUKOTTAI: Four members of a family from Jaffana, including an infant, who arrived at Manamelkudi on Friday, were sent to the Mandapam camp.

According to official sources, Dhanushankar (13), his brother Dayabaran (23), his wife Dhanusha (22) and their infant had landed at Manamelkudi. The officials sent them to the camp at Mandapam.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 85.29 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Saturday. The inflow was 310 cusecs and the discharge, 8,000 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

63 file nomination papers for by-poll

Tuticorin: A total of 63 persons had submitted their nomination papers for the by-elections to various local bodies in the district, after the filing of nominations ended on Saturday. Official sources said of the total 63 persons, 35 had filed their papers for the post of ward members in 24 village panchayats, 21 for the post of presidents of four village panchayts and seven for the post of one town panchayat ward member. Of the 21 nominations received for the post of village panchayat presidents, four were for Meerankulam, 12 for Kulasekarapattinam, one for Paraikootam and the remaining for Sivagnanpuram village panchayats. The scrutiny of the nominations will be held on January 29 and the elections on February 8.

Youth held for murder

Tuticorin: The police on Saturday arrested Selvakumar (22) on the charge of murdering his sister-in-law, Ananda Jyothi (31) at Puthiampudur near here on Friday. According to police, the accused killed her owing to family disputes.

National-level seminar concludes

Tuticorin: A two-day national-level seminar, organised by the Institution of Engineers (India), Tuticorin centre, which concluded here on Thursday, discussed topics such as conservation of water and energy in industries.

A total of 200 engineers, students, academicians and equipment manufactures exchanged their ideas on the topics. Twenty research papers were presented over six sessions and a souvenir containing the synopsis of the papers were released.

Conference on `Network security'

ERODE: Erode Sengunthar Engineering College, Thudupathi, will conduct a three-day international conference on `Network security' from January 29.

A release from the college reasons that in times when hackers and mischief mongers could bring in loss of data worth crores of Rupees, it is important to bring in network experts to deliberate on the ways to protect the internet.

Experts from UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Nigeria and India will deliberate on information security, computer network and security system perspective, ubiquitous computing, mobile agent-based networks and wireless sensor networks, current trends in public key cryptographic systems, ad hoc networks, mobile computing, fault tolerance and security.

Killed in accident

NAMAKKAL: A Sudanese national studying in a college was killed when a car hit his motorcycle at Velagoundampatti near here on Saturday.
