KOCHI: The former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer has called for a campaign against commercialisation of education. He was releasing a book on education, written by Minister for Education M.A. Baby, here on Saturday. Mr. Iyer said it had become difficult for ordinary people to pursue higher education. The reforms introduced by the Left Democratic Front Government were meant to help the people. Any move to commercialise education should be opposed, Mr. Iyer added. Mr. Baby said he was concerned about the situation whereby poor people were unable to pursue higher education. He recalled that a girl had committed suicide after she found it difficult to meet the expenses of education. The Government wanted to ensure that such incidents did not recur. Answering questions of journalists, he said the Government had begun the process of consulting representatives of managements of educational institutions on the reforms in higher education. Mr. Iyer handed over the book Aagoleekarana Kalathe Vidyabhyasam Oru Idathupaksha Sameepanam (education in the time of globalisation a Leftist approach) to Indira Jaisingh, senior Supreme Court advocate. The function was held at the residence of Mr. Iyer. Ms. Jaisingh stressed the need for a fight to ensure the right to education. No profiteering could be allowed in education. Facilitating globalisation should not be the goal of legal authorities, she said.
