BANGALORE: Stating that the Government is not averse to encouraging any language or dialect and its culture, I.M. Vittalamurthy, Secretary to the Government, Department of Kannada and Culture, has said that the Beary language, which had its origins in Dakshina Kannada, deserves the attention of the Government.

He was speaking at a function organised by the Bearys' Welfare Association here on Saturday.

Responding to the demand made by the association that the Government should constitute a separate Beary academy on the lines of other academies because over nine lakh people speak that language across the State, Mr. Vittalmurthy said he would draw the Government's attention to it.

The former Chief Minster and the Chairman of the Central Administrative Reforms Commission, M. Veerappa Moily, said that there was a need to develop a holistic view of all cultures and languages of the country irrespective of their ethnic roots. "We should discourage parochial approach to one's own culture and language for protecting the integrated outlook of the country," he said.

Referring to the role of castes, sub-castes, minorities and others in the task of nation building, He said although independent identity was essential for all, collective outlook and approach would form the edifice of the national growth in all spheres. Besides, ethics had its own major role to ply in the governance and administration. The Central Administrative Reforms Commission would refer the issue in its observations.

Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde felicitated meritorious students from Beary community. The former Minister B.A. Mohideen made introductory speech and association president B.M. Farooque presided over the function.
