Nagarjuna canal breach being plugged

Special Correspondent

DAMAGE CONTROL: Work in progress at the Nagarjunasagar left bank canal that was breached.

HYDERABAD: Work has commenced on a war footing to plug the breach to the Left Bank Canal of Nagarjunasagar at Velidanda in Chilkur mandal of Nalgonda district.

Hundreds of workers have been engaged for earthwork to fill the breach and form the canal-bund again.

A group of engineers were camping at the site to complete the work as early possible.

Major Irrigation Minister P. Lakshmaiah who inspected the works on Saturday, told The Hindu later that the water into the canal would be re-released in two or three days.

The canal is serving a rabi ayacut of about 4 lakh acres in Naglonda district.

The Minister said the discharge to the canal would be increased to about 8,000 cusecs finally after re-release of water after plugging the breach.

The release would invariably be through power generation.

The Left Bank Canal head-regulator has two units, each with 30 MW capacity.
