100 crores for post-matric scholarships

Special Correspondent

Amount to be spent on hostel maintenance and reimbursement of tuition fee for 4.21 lakh students

HYDERABAD: Faced with all-round criticism for slashing the welfare budget, the State Government decided to release Rs. 100 crores towards post-matric scholarships of Scheduled Castes students for the fourth quarter of this year, pending receipt of funds under Centrally sponsored schemes.

The amount would be spent on maintenance of hostels and reimbursement of tuition fee for 4.21 lakh students, an official release said. Political parties as well as organisations representing various backward classes have attacked the Government for neglecting the interests of the weaker sections while the Telugu Desam Party has even chalked out an action programme.

Plea for transparency

At a meeting with officials of the Social Welfare Department here on Saturday, the Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy asked them to ensure transparency in distribution of scholarships and other benefits to students.

The release pointed out that the Rs. 100 crores was in addition to Rs. 218.55 crores released during the year as part of the planned budget and Central assistance for post-matric scholarships. The amount was utilised for payment of arrears of scholarships for para-medical and regular courses during 2005-06 and meeting the maintenance charges of hostels in the current year.

Dr. Reddy promised to consider release of Rs. 8.93 crores towards payment of arrears for cosmetic, tutor, water, electricity and other expenditure of hostels. Social Welfare Commissioner, R.M. Gonela, was present.
