KANNUR: It was an occasion for the Kannur Sports Division attached to the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School here to rejoice when one of its students was selected for undergoing the selection training camp of Indian athletic team in South Africa for the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Anu Mariam Jose, Plus Two student attached to the Kannur Sports Division, hailing from Pambakuda in Ernakulam, is one of the two athletes from the State who had been selected for the selection training in South Africa. She has been selected on the basis of her performance in 400-800 metre race in the last Junior Asian Games in Beijing, according to the school authorities. She broke the record of Beenamol in the 800-metre run in the State School Sports Meet in Thiruvananthapuram in 2005. Anu Marian Jose will leave for South Africa for the three-month selection training from New Delhi on February 5. She was felicitated at the school reference assembly convened on Saturday. School principal C.H. Valsan was among those who felicitated her.
First time
Mr. Valsan said that it was for the first time that a school student had been selected for Olympics selection training. Athlete P.T. Usha, who had been attached to the Sports Division here, had been selected for the Olympics selection camp after she left the school here, he said. Anu Marian Jose was able to prove athletic talents despite limited facilities at the Sports Division. The Sports Division here has 200 students and four coaches.
