JNU Teachers' Association demands revision of wage scales and better facilities

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association has adopted a charter of demands relating to various issues of academics, service and health, including improvement in existing health care facilities, and setting up of a University Grants Commission (UGC) pay committee for revision of pay scales.

At a meeting, the JNUTA general body demanded appointment of the UGC committee for revision of teachers' wage scales in continuation of the Sixth Central Pay Commission and parity of pay scales with the faculty of the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institutes of Management. It also demanded re-employment for all retiring teachers up to the age of 65 till the implementation of the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development and UGC proposal for enhancing the retirement age to 65 in Central universities.

On the issue of housing facilities, JNUTA president Chaman Lal said: "There is an acute shortage of houses for the new faculty. The University must address this problem. There should also be time-bound repair, allotment and occupation of vacant houses as per the priority list."

Apart from asking for more facilities to be provided to its office, including renovation of rooms, a part-time typist and peon, the JNUTA called for strengthening of the public transport system on the campus, installation of guide maps and strict implementation of the 25-km speed limit within the University area.
