CHENNAI: St. Bede's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School is all set for its yearlong centenary celebration, which will begin on Wednesday, on the school premises at Santhome.

The series of events will culminate in a grand celebration, scheduled for January 2008, coinciding with the feast of St. John Don Bosco.

Existence of the school can be traced to 1820-30, when Portuguese friar Manuel de Ave Maria, Episcopal Administrator of the Diocese of Mylapore, started an orphanage for poor Anglo-Indian children and those of European patronage.

In 1906-07, Lord Curzon announced the new scheme of European education for the whole country. Theotonius Emmanuel Ribeiro Vieira de Castro, Bishop of Mylapore, decided to start a school for Anglo-Indian children. The small facility for 55 students was shifted to its present location in 1934.

Known for its holistic approach to education and achievements in sports in particular, St. Bede's has made a mark in music too. Fr. Tomatis started its brass band. Alumni of the school met on Friday and formed a committee that would be involved in the celebration. Fr. Joe Andrew, rector and correspondent, and Fr. Michael, headmaster, plan to modernise the facilities.

Future plans

An online interface for administration, curriculum formation and parents, students and teacher interaction has been planned. They also plan to adopt villages and maximise opportunities for good education in those areas. A centenary memorial auditorium will be built and inaugurated at the valedictory of the celebration.
