Chennai: The marriage of fifty-one poor couples was conducted with assistance from The Rotary Club of Madras Central on a single platform here on Friday. Speaking on the occasion, State Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy lauded the Rotarians for taking efforts in uniting couples who required such support. He wanted the young couples, especially those living below the poverty line, to give themselves ample time before they planned a child. Responding to a request made earlier, Mr. Veerasamy said he would take up their plea for inclusion in the government's free LPG supply scheme with the Chief Minister. Chairman (Rotary Information) P. Srinivasan said the project "Mangal sutra" was started in October 2006. A committee had screened and identified the 51 couples whose age, residential and financial proof were verified. The mass wedding was performed as per the conventional Hindu custom and the self-respect movement. The Rotarians had arranged for the registration of each couple with the authorities concerned at the mandapam itself as per the Hindu Marriage Act, he added. Rotary Club of Madras Central president Vinod Saraogi thanked the sponsors for supporting the Rs.7 lakh project. State Social Welfare Minister Poongothai and film exhibitor `Abirami' Ramanathan spoke.
