dated January 29, 1957: Centenary of Madras University

The centenary celebrations of the Madras University were inaugurated on January 28 by Sri Jaya Chamaraja Wadiyar, Governor of Mysore, at an impressive function at the university campus in Chepauk, Madras. In his address, the Mysore Governor said: "The universities have to balance and reconcile various and often conflicting claims - of thought and action, of matter and spirit, shall we say also of science and the humanities and of men and women; they have to supplement knowledge at every stage by wisdom, to fire conventional patriotism with the divine spark of fellow-feeling; they have to instil integrity and teach men invariably to prefer justice and peace." Mr. P.V. Rajamannar, Chief Justice of Madras and President of the Centenary Celebrations Committee, in his welcome speech, pointed out that the two qualities which distinguished the product of the Madras University were command of language and capacity of expression and a sense of discipline. The celebrations were inaugurated in an atmosphere of academic dignity in the spacious pandal erected in the campus, between the Senate House and the university administrative buildings. The presence of a large number of delegates representing universities abroad and other academic institutions and the representatives of various universities in India, in their colourful academic robes, added grace to the occasion. These delegates entered the pandal in a procession and occupied the northern wing of the dais. Behind them came the members of the Madras Senate, fully robed, also in a procession, and occupied their allotted seats on the southern wing of the dais. A couple of minutes later, the Governor of Mysore and the Vice-President, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, were conducted to the dais in a procession with the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. A. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar, and the Pro-Chancellor, Mr. C. Subramaniam, leading them. Those present on the dais included the Madras Governor, Mr. A.J. John, Mrs. John, Mr. C. Rajagopalachari, Dr. C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar, Mr. C.D. Deshmukh, General K.M. Cariappa, Sir C.V. Raman and Lady Raman.
