Letters to the Editor
The article "Farewell, sweet Faizal" (Jan. 27) on the death of the 12-year-old boy in police firing during the communal unrest in Bangalore made disturbing reading. The incident throws the spotlight on the conspicuous apathy of the police and society at large to the poor and powerless. The police, in their desire to look active, take the lives of the vulnerable because they can seldom do anything to rein in the real wrongdoers. The upper and middle classes too are indifferent to the plight of the disadvantaged. All this reflects the materialism that has engulfed us as a result of systematic disappearance of values.
It is indeed shameful that a young orphan died at the hands of the police. Worse, no organisation has come forward to provide justice to him.
It is always the poor and powerless who bear the brunt of violence. Why has nobody been held accountable for Faizal's death?
Tanvir Ahmad,
We are unable to provide food and shelter to those unfortunate children who make pavements their homes and busy streets their schools. We say we cannot help the situation; we are a poor nation. But what right do we have to fire shots at them? Dear Faizal, please forgive us.
P.S. Lekshmi,
The article implies that the police intentionally targeted Faizal when it says they, in a bid to quell the rioting mobs, found a vulnerable target. While it is very unfortunate that the young boy had to die for no fault of his, it is wrong to blame the police for the incident.
