R-Day gift

Energy-starved India could not have asked for a better Republic Day gift than the memorandum of intent it signed with Russia to add four units to the nuclear power plant under construction at Koodankulam, besides building an unspecified number of nuclear power reactors at new sites. As the editorial "Fusion with an old friend" (Jan. 26) rightly points out, in the face of the continuing ambiguity on the fate of the Indo-U.S. civilian nuclear deal, Russia stepping in to address India's energy crisis is heartening indeed!

Nalini Vijayaraghavan,
Thiruvananthapuram

As indicated in the editorial, Russia, as always, has proved an all-weather friend of India. It has not imposed demeaning preconditions seen in the Indo-U.S. deal. Devotees of the only superpower would do well to draw some lessons from this and not relentlessly mislead the nation into believing the inevitability of subservience to the cloak-and-dagger conditionalities of the U.S. by invoking the ingeniously coined term "enlightened national interest."

Kasim Sait,
Chennai
