Bank's bid to reach out to the needy

Stricken by poverty and diagnosed with renal disease, P. Sudha, 27, had almost given up on life. With both parents working for a pittance as manual labourers and no other income, the young woman from Vallakadavu was struggling to find the means for prolonged medical treatment.

Bhavani from Vilavoorkavu was the only solace for her mentally ill husband when fate struck a cruel blow. She suffered grievous injuries in both hands in an accident, making her unable to fend for her bed-ridden husband.

Hailing from a poor family, Omana, mother of two girls and a victim of breast cancer, had little means of raising the money required for chemotherapy.

For these three women, help came from an unexpected quarter. They were among the needy persons selected for financial assistance by the Kshema Social Circle of State Bank of Travancore. The assistance was distributed at a function organised at the zonal office of the bank on January 26.

The list of beneficiaries included victims of breast cancer, tuberculosis, mental problems, asthma, chest pain, uterus problems as well as the handicapped and blind persons and those stricken by paralysis. Four students were selected for educational assistance. Circle members distributed study materials to the children. Kshema also gave a helping hand to people from the lower strata of society for rehabilitation and repairs to thatched huts.

G.R. Jayakrishnan, secretary, Thiruvananthapuram zone (ABOA unit- SBT); K.S. Sreekumar, assistant secretary, Employees Union; Prem G. Nath, chief manager (security); Kshema Social Circle leader N. Subramania Iyer; and the former leader K.Mahadevan; addressed the gathering.
